Erik Seidel出生于纽约。Erik在20世纪70年代也就是他17-18岁的时候开始专心于西洋棋并能靠这个赚取日常花费。他进入布鲁克林大学，在拿到学位之后计划找一个“真正的”工作，但是有时“真正的”工作是令人腻烦的。西洋棋就让他忙碌起来，他非常喜欢参加锦标赛。后来Erik被朋友介绍去做股票贸易。( p0 r. d. w3 W$ K( ]! V6 b

在20世纪80年代中期，Erik去了几次拉斯维加斯参加世界西洋棋业余选手锦标赛这样的比赛。在一次旅行中，他开始玩扑克，并且在他回到纽约之后也开始玩很多的扑克。在著名的Mayfair俱乐部中有一些桥牌和西洋棋选手开始定期的玩扑克，而在那里玩牌的人中有很多的好手，其中的代表有Howard Lederer 和 Dan Harrington。4 V4 e% s( K3 o8 c- g1 `

1987年美国股市崩盘让Erik失去了工作，从此，他便可以用大部分时间玩牌了。良好的扑克基础让Erik成长迅速。1988年，WSOP ME，Erik惊人的杀入决赛桌，并一路过关斩将，最终与Johnny Chan对决。

1992年，Erik在$2500有限hold';em比赛的中赢得他的第一个WSOP金手链。接下来的两年里，每年他都获得了一个手链，拿下了Omaha$2500比赛和接下来的1994年$5,000有限hold';em比赛。胜利让他决定离开纽约，到一个玩牌更容易的地方去，他劝服了他的妻子Ruah搬到了赌城拉斯维加斯。! |, ]) Y# J0 V G# {. J4 i) C
