著名的美國 ETF 有「道瓊工業指數基金」(DIAMONDS Trust)、「那斯達克 100 科技指數基金」(NASDAQ 100 Index) 等。 普遍來說，合法證券商自選多家上市股票化做單一指數，把眾多股票的表現化做單ㄧ數值，投資人只要依據關心單一數值做買賣即可，稱作指數型基金。在美、中、日、台、港皆有指數型基金。 比特幣 ETF，和股票的綜合指數不同，它只有一個標的就是「比特幣」。證券商會依據市場交易數據、比特幣價，定義出一個指數標準，可能會以幣價或是另做參考數值作為表示。 芝商所 (CME) 從 2016 年 11 月起已有(BRTI)，若比特幣 ETF 成行就很可能依據此模型再做調整。 比特幣 ETF 會為加密貨幣市場帶來什麼影響？首先，即使比特幣期貨也是衍生性金融商品，不過有兩個關鍵性的缺陷，讓市場規模發展有所限制： - 只有專業投資人與大戶得以進場。以 CME 為例，單一合約為

不過，若是比特幣 ETF 核准，它就相當於提供了一個管道，讓不熟悉比特幣買賣的人們，也可以像投資傳統股票市場一樣，拿起你的電話，告訴經紀人：「幫我買比特幣 ETF。」這樣簡單。
為什麼一定要是美國，其他國家不行嗎？為何眾人這麼關注美國的比特幣 ETF 發展，其他國家怎麼不自己做，這與經濟體大小、傳統金融發展的慣例相關。 據 MICA Research Team 表示，美國在全球 ETF 市場最具指標性，相對來說一樣是龐大經濟體的歐盟，效率較低，資本市場欠缺整合，短期內比特幣 ETF 這種具爭議性的商品，較難成型。 中國則是因對加密貨幣政策的限制，較無發展可能 ; 日本傳統金融體制保守，較難發展 ; 韓國經濟規模較小，沒有實質影響力。 也就是說，當美國率先通過比特幣 ETF 的話，其他地區金融市場可能跟進，諸多「圈外人」得以用買股票的方式購買比特幣，這麼一來等於大大開啟資金湧進的機會。
